There is a lot of discussion out there about diffusion lines, such as Marc by Marc Jacobs, Armani spin offs, or the Go International collaborations available through Target. The pros of having diffusion lines available are that pieces by highly respected designers are made available to consumers trying to live within their means. The cons are that some diffusion lines are made by design teams instead of the lead designer (this can mean the line has little in common with the runway line), thus the consumer is not getting what they are paying for; the quality can be poor, and often the sizing can be difficult to predict.
Personally, I've enjoyed the spoils of the Go International collaborations. Here are two examples of pieces I've gotten this year:

It also is no secret that bloggers are clamouring for these pretty babies:

I'm also aware that the Posen skirt may have been an impulse buy; just so I could own something by Zac Posen. What I haven't shared is that I have a nearly identical skirt that I got at a thrift store for 6 bucks. It is a dark olive green that looks black (the Posen skirt is black), and a tad longer; however only you lovely readers would probably notice the difference. Don't get me wrong, I love the skirt, but I didn't buy it because there was a lack in my wardrobe; in part I bought it for the label. I know it is a piece I'll use for a long time in many different ways... however it was unnecessary.
I will tell you that I did not have a striped shirt before the Rodarte purchase, and I have clearly gotten my money's worth out of it.
For me, I can appreciate a diffusion line. I think it is a matter of consumer discernment and having the sand to admit that it is a diffusion product.
So, readers, what do you think of diffusion lines?

I think it is great when big and really expensive designer make a collection for cheaper stores like H&M or something :)
i wish i could have something from the zac posen collection :)
Those shoes are so pretty and your outfits are very cute:)
I love that they try to put out items for cheaper....
Kisses darling and have a great day:)

I like diffusion lines, it makes it more affordable to get something our favorite designer creates :)
I agree that sometimes the sizing and quality can be unpredictable but that's true of other clothing lines as well. I love diffusion lines (otherwise I would probably never be able to afford some of the bigger designers), but I shop them the same as I shop at other places and pay close attention to the quality and fit of the garment.

I LOVE diffusion lines; however, I've been extremely unimpressed with the quality of the pieces. As well as the prices as of late. It's Target...they shouldn't be charging upwards of $79.99 for a dress. Honestly, I rarely buy from any of these lines - Cynthia Vincent for Target was the exception! J'adore!! :)
I am pro the diffusion lines. I love it when I can buy something by Jimmy Choo or Dolce or... ya know what I mean :)

I love that second outfit. You look gorgeous! As for diffusion lines, I've never been into them so I don't really have an opinion haha ♥
I'm all for it! My style is definitely an expensive one so anytime I can dress with some semblance of style then I love it.
I think sometimes these cooperations should have more quality and not just the label. Anyway it's a great step for fashion to have these, like H&M and it's a new approach to consummers who otherwise couldn't get any of their pieces, for obvious reasons* Thanks for the lovely comment :)
My thoughts echo those of Courtney Erin's and Cafe Fahionista..and you know I scored those wedges!
I am always interested in diffusion lines and I take it case by case whether I'm going to buy or not. Often I'm not happy with the quality but like you I've purchased things just to have the label. The good thing about it is that I'm not impulse buying and wasting a lot of money. Overall I think they're a great idea.
Two very different looks, and I luv them both. That skirt is fabulous!!
The only brand name items I wear are: glasses, purses, jackets and shoes. I do this for several reasons:
- I change my wardrobe so frequently I don't see the value of wearing brand names. I have clothing ADD, lol!
- These pieces seem to make the most impact
- These pieces are often classic in appearance allowing me to wear them over a longer period of time (i.e. my Burberry trench, purchased in NY in 2008... I see myself wearing this for years to come).
So, I say, Kudos to the inspiration and impression pieces at a more affordable price :)
I certainly have mixed feelings about the lines too. Sometimes the quality isn't that great, but I can generally deal with that knowing that they are obviously priced much lower than the actual designer lines. As long as the spirit of the designer (his/her aesthetic is still there) then I really enjoy these spin-off lines. I thought Zac Posen did a fabulous job with his latest Target collection. He still kept his spirit in the line. I too however, couldn't find the pieces I wanted (everything sells out so fast) so I resorted to buying a Zac tank just to have a little piece of Posen in my closet. ;)
Sorry for the long response, lol.

hahaha - I have to admit to having bought for the label before too.
And I'm all for making things affordable!

I agree, I can completely appreciate a diffusion line. But I also choose the items carefully because usually the fit is abnormal or there's just something a little off about it. I love your striped top! It's definitely one of those items you can wear over and over with so many different outfits.

I think that diffusion lines are GREAT. Marc by Marc Jacobs is one of my favorite brands. However, I'm totally with Valerie -- it's all about making sure pieces fit well and are made well also.

That Zac Posen for Target look is fantastic, darling!
I'm so sad that I didn't snap up some of those pieces!

Absolutely love Marc by Marc Jacobs. I'm excited for Mulberry bags to do a diffusion line.
Love your choices. I love these lines. Zac Posen's wasn't my favorite but I really liked Rodarte. Missed out on buying any for myself, though...
i love that you blogged about diffusion lines. i've done blog posts about JPG and Zac Posen for Target (and I happen to be wearing my gaultier for target top as I type). I would prefer that the designers themselves worked on the clothing for the diffusion lines in all cases, but either way, I totally get why they choose to do it. i love being able to own something by jean-paul gaultier that didn't cost an arm and a leg. target and all designers who choose to do this are badass!
love it. and i love the zac posen (and the rodarte) you bought. i need to get over to target or target.com to pick something up.

i completely agree with you: love the idea, but wary of the execution. thank goodness for fitting rooms and return policies. :P
great post!
ps - there's tons waiting for you here in seattle. you'll be bombarded by recommendations if you post about a trip here. :P
I'm all over the diffusion lines. you just have to be patient and try the stuff on, but it's totally worth it if done well. i love the rodarte on you...the zac posen as well. i totally splurged on the zac for target - got the poufy dress in midnight/black, the tuxedo blazer and the yellow rain jacket. now if it would only rain. :)
ps - have you stopped by and thrown your details in for the melinda maria pyramid spiked bangle? if you haven't (and you're interested) please do. it's from the collection i viewed on sunday and i saw you commented. it's really pretty!!
everyone's welcome and for one entry you don't even have to be a follower. :)
I like diffusion lines.
I love the Zac Posen on you.
LOVE!
I agree. Those Cynthia Vincent shoes are to die for.
Melanie@UnravelledThreads
I like them, its a good way to get designer stuff for less money. But they are still a lot of money so I don't have any XD
I did buy one of the Zac lipstick tank tops but it looked like garbage on me so I sold it on eBay

Hi Lisa, thanks for the visit and the lovely comment.
Love the pictures, the first the most.
Please come back anytime you want, I will!

Great question. I'm kind of torn because I know cheaper items just means more cheaply made clothing made in China. But that doesn't mean I never buy them. I don't usually buy for labels alone but if I do like a designer I want to know I'm getting their design and quality.
I want those shoes too!

I never got anything from the Target lines until the Cynthia Vincent collection and I lost my mind trying to get those wedges. I'm happy to have them but I didn't like having to endure the madness!
i want those wedges!! aaahh!!!
i think diffusion lines are a good way to spark interest to the fashion industry! :) unfortunately here in canada, we don't have target, so i haven't really gotten access to these pieces.. :( (unless i buy them at ebay for insane prices!)
Animated Confessions
I like diffusion lines, they give people a chance to be able to buy 'designer' at a low price. Love your two purchases.SarahD
You look gorgeous in both pictures!
I think diffusion lines are actually ok to some degree as long as they aren't confused for the real thing. It's a good way to keep a designer's name accessable and in the public eye, especially in a recession when maybe their more expensive lines are not selling at it's usual volume...
It's hard not to get lured in by the name. If the piece is well made and is from a diffusion line, that's just divine. But sometimes you need to keep in mind that's a Target garment with a designer label sewn in. It's not a designer garment sold at Target.
